Kayak fishing is the hottest sub-genre in freshwater fishing. There are hundreds of choices from simplistic sit-in kayaks to thousand dollar motor-powered beasts. How to choose which one is right for you can be overwhelming.
I started my search like most people – at big box stores: Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Academy, etc. Still, the choices can be quite daunting. What do you want the kayak for? Leisure? Fast water? Slow water? Easy maneuver? Speed? The questions go on and on and you need to be a forward thinking outdoors person or, like me, build a spreadsheet with decision factors.
Spreadsheets, I love spreadsheets. So simple, yet so powerful. I started with a price range I could afford then looked online at all the locations within reach that were selling boats in that price range – spreadsheet started!
I whittled them down, one by one until I came up with the most affordable, least compromised choice which was the Pelican Enforcer 100x.
Needless to say, I was very excited to have my first kayak and couldn’t wait to dust off the fishing gear and get some tight lines however, I needed to learn how to properly operate this thing.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: WEAR A PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE!! I CAN’T STRESS THIS ENOUGH!! PEOPLE LOVE YOU AND WANT YOU TO COME HOME AFTER A FUN DAY OF FISHING.
So, my best bud that I’ve known for 45 years goes with me on my maiden launch. Life jacket – check; paddle – check; swim trunks – check…ready..to..go! I’m nervous and unsteady but I did it! I did not flip the kayak! Yay! We paddled for a good hour and I loved it. I can’t believe I’m 50 and never thought to kayak fish, or canoe fish for that matter.
What an amazing Halfway Home pinnacle point this was for my adventure! I searched, shopped, purchased and launched my first kayak – what an amazing feeling! I hope you stay tuned for our next adventure where I convince my wife to try kayaking and see where her Halfway Home experience takes us!
God bless, stay safe.
